Just Peachy
Certain scents bring back such vivid memories and for me, every summer when I catch the scent of the season's first, fresh peach, it immediately takes me back to childhood. My mom would bring home fresh peaches and my sister and I would gladly jump in to help preserve some of them so we could enjoy them throughout the year. Luckily my mom bought extra as she knew her little helpers would be eating them along the way. We would always reserve enough to make a batch of peach ice cream and our favorite, peach cobbler.
Peach Cobbler was my mom's specialty and she baked it to perfection each time. She would bake it in the same Pyrex dish and we would as patiently as possible, wait for her to take it out of the oven and stand over it until it cooled enough to be served. We would each get a bowl with warm, sweet peaches, a biscuit and a scoop of ice cream.
This is a tradition I plan to keep with my own family and we made it for my daughter to try for the first time this year. She seemed to love it as much as I do and it was so special to get to share those memories with her.
Nothing says summer in Texas quite like peaches. While roadside stands offer up plenty of delicious options, there’s something truly special about going peach picking at one of the many Texas peach farms and grabbing your fruit right off the tree.
Picking your own peaches is a fun, family-friendly activity perfect for a hot summer morning. Here are a few in the Houston area to check out (harvest dates vary every year, so be sure to call before heading out)
